Getting around Australia by train

Australia is a vast country and train travel is a relatively comfortable option to get to certain parts. It is not a fast option, but can be a great experience and good opportunity to see some of the more remote parts of the country.

Interstate train services

The four main interstate services are operated by Great Southern Rail (phone 13 21 47). These are:

  • Indian Pacific (between Sydney, Adelaide and Perth)

  • The Ghan (between Adelaide, Alice Springs and Darwin

  • The Overland (between Melbourne and Adelaide)

  • The Southern Spirit (Between Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane).

Great Southern Rail offer special backpacker fares on the Indian Pacific, The Ghan and The Overland services.

  • NSW TrainLink - Phone 13 22 32, operate train services to Brisbane, Melbourne and Canberra from Sydney and other destinations in New South Wales.

Intrastate train services

  • NSW TrainLink - Phone 13 22 32, provide regular scheduled train and bus services throughout New South Wales. They also provide regular scheduled train services to Brisbane, Melbourne and Canberra from Sydney and other destinations in New South Wales.

  • V/Line - Phone 13 61 96, provide regular scheduled train and bus services throughout Victoria and into parts of New South Wales, South Australia and to Canberra.

  • Queensland Rail - Phone 13 16 17, provide regular scheduled train services between Brisbane and Cairns, Brisbane and Longreach, Brisbane and Charleville and Townsville and Mount Isa.

  • TransWA - Phone 1300 662 205, provide regular scheduled train and bus services throughout Western Australia.
