Diving on the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is one of seven wonders of the natural world and the world's largest coral reef. There are over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays stretching more than two thousand kilometres along the Queensland Coast. It is one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth and here you will find an incredible array of marine life and underwater landscapes, making it one of the best diving and snorkelling destinations on the planet.

Townsville diving information

There are several popular dive sites in the Great Barrier Reef accessed from Townsville. There are are Wheeler and Davies reefs, which are located approximately 50 nautical miles from Townsville. These both have some stunning underwater landscapes including swim-through's, underwater canyons, caves, gullies and sensational wall dives. You will also find plenty of colourful marine life and corals.

There is the famous S.S. Yongala located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The S.S. YONGALA sank in 1911 with the loss of all aboard, creating one of Australia's most intriguing maritime mysteries. She lay undiscovered for more than half a century. The wreck has become home to an incredible array of marine life including giant gropers, schools of giant trevally, turtles, sea snakes and manta rays.

There is also the Palm Islands, which are made up of 10 individual islands surrounded by stunning fringing reefs and walls. The dive sites range from shallow reef edges to abandoned wrecks in 75m of water. There is a huge abundance of marine life and beautiful coloured corals. The dives offer something for every experience level. The islands are located approximately 30 nautical miles from Townsville.
