The busy town of Port Hedland is primarily concerned with industry. From here, the enormous amounts of iron ore mined from the Pilbara are shipped overseas.
If you are interested in heavy machinery or mining, the Visitor Centre runs BHP Billiton Iron Ore Tours. The centre also offers various other tours and has a notice board advising when ships are due in port. The best vantage point to observe these huge bulk ore carriers is at Marapikurrinya Park.
Port Hedland is a good spot for fishing, whale watching and watching turtles nesting at various times of the year at Eighty Mile Beach.
The town is more of a pit-stop on the way to other places.
