The city centre is a combination of modern high-rise and beautiful historical buildings. Melbourne's city centre is very well laid out in a grid. Latrobe Street borders the north, Flinders Street the south, Spring Street the east and Spencer Street the west.
The city centre is filled with amazing eateries, not all of them in obvious locations. The smaller city streets hide some of the best Greek, Italian and other cosmopolitan eateries.
China Town occupies two blocks of the city, starting at the corner of Swanston and Little Bourke streets. This is an excellent place to sample some tasty Chinese and other Asian food.
The Bourke St Mall sits between Swanston and Elizabeth streets and is one of the main shopping areas in Melbourne. You will find major departments stores along with hundreds of other shops to choose from.
Some of the most interesting places are often found in the city's laneways and alleyways. You can find some of Melbourne's coolest bars, excellent hole in the wall eateries and specialty shops selling original products, tucked away in these more obscure locations.
The city centre also has plenty of attractions, such as many of the State's main museums and galleries, Federation Square and other significant buildings like The State Library of Victoria, St Paul's Cathedral and Parliament House.
Just on the other side of the river is Docklands, a relatively newly developed area that includes many of Melbourne's finest restaurants, cafes and bars.
For sports lovers, the world famous Melbourne Cricket Ground, (MCG) lies across Wellington Parade, as does Melbourne Park, home of the Australian Open Tennis Championships.
There are plenty of backpacker hostels located in the city centre, allowing you easy access to many of Melbourne's best attractions.
