Strahan Highlights

  • Take a cruise to explore the spectacular and remote Gordon River World Heritage Area.

  • Take a ride on the West Coast Wilderness Railway from Queenstown, which passes through some stunning dense rainforest, along pristine rivers and other amazing scenery.

  • Take the Bonnet Island Experience on a tiny island at the mouth of Macquarie Harbour, which is home to a thriving colony of Little Penguins and Short-tailed Shearwaters.

About Strahan

Population 700

This small picturesque fishing village is the major harbour town on Tasmania's west coast and is a great base to explore the spectacular and remote Gordon River World Heritage Area. You can do this with one of the cruise companies in town.

Another nice experience is the steam railway journey from Queenstown. This train trip will take you through some stunning dense rainforest, along pristine rivers and other amazing scenery.

If you are looking for some adventure or adrenaline thrills, you could take a jet boat trip up the King River, go four wheel driving or sand boarding in the sand dunes at Ocean Beach, or kayak on some of the beautiful waterways.
