About the Flinders Ranges

If you're seeking some adventure and want to experience Australia's outback, then you wont be disappointed with South Australia's largest mountain range, the Flinders Ranges.

There are three main sections to the Ranges. There is the southern section, where you can climb Mount Remarkable for some amazing views of the region. In the middle is the spectacular natural amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound and in the northern section you can experience arid outback Australia in addition to a wilderness sanctuary.

Southern Flinders Ranges

This part is known for its excellent mountain biking and bushwalking (hiking) trails. These trails can take you through some truly spectacular scenery, including the summit of Mount Remarkable, where you can experience some breathtaking views of the Southern Ranges.

Central Flinders Ranges

The highlight of this section is Wilpena Pound, a majestic natural amphitheatre, spanning approximately 17km in length and 7km in width. Here you can hike to the rim and see awesome views from the Wilpena Lookout, or fly over it on a scenic flight and witness this remote place from a different perspective, where it looks like it was from a time forgotten in our prehistoric past.

The place also has great significance to the Indigenous Adnyamathanha people and you can see Aboriginal art sites at Arkaroo Rock and Sacred Canyon.

Other attractions include walks to Ferntree Falls, Rawnsley Bluff and Clem Corner. If you are interested in tracing the geological history of the area, the Brachina Gorge Geological Trail (located off the Wilpena-Blinman road) features a series of interpretive maps.

Northern Flinders Ranges

This is real Outback Australian countryside, with rugged and remote landscapes, inhabited by local Aboriginal people and native wildlife.

While you are here, you can check out the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, which contains some of Australia's most spectacular mountain views, over 160 species of birds, the shy and endangered Yellow-Footed Rock-Wallaby and is also a mecca for bushwalkers and four-wheel drivers.

Popular towns in the Flinders Ranges

Quorn

This pretty, charming, little town is a great place to visit. There is a pub on almost every corner, some nice shops and good places to eat and get a drink.

It is also home to the Pichi Richi Railway, a popular steam train trip that travels through the rugged and picturesque countryside to Port Augusta.

There are some great scenic places near the town including, Mount Brown (14 kilometres south), which is the highest peak in the area, rising over 900 metres. Nearer to the town is Devil's Peak and Dutchmans stern, which overlook the valley with their rocky outcrops. To the north is where Warren and Buckaringa Gorges carve through the hills to Mount Arden.

Melrose

Located at the foot of Mount Remarkable National Park. The town serves a rural community and is a nice holiday retreat. It is known as mountain bike central for its great biking tracks around the surrounding area.

Many of the town's attractions are within walking distance. You can climb to the War Memorial for a panoramic view over the Willochra Plain, or to Lookout Hill near the water tanks. Cathedral Rock is a spectacular formation along the edge of Mount Remarkable Creek, west of the town. You can also visit the Melrose Courthouse Heritage Centre, which has a great display of the early history of the upper and far north of South Australia.
