About Mount Isa

Population 21,000

If you are travelling through this part of the country then Mt Isa will probably seem like an oasis in the harsh surrounding landscape. The town is situated among the ochre-red Selwyn Ranges, on the banks of the Leichhardt River. Its main function is to support the huge Mt Isa Mine, which is the world's largest single producer of copper, silver, lead and zinc.

However, there are also some worthwhile attractions and things to do in town or nearby. There is the Outback at Isa Complex, which incorporates Hard Times Mine Tour, Isa Experience Gallery, Outback Park, Riversleigh Fossil Centre and the Visitor Information Centre. You could also take a tour of a mine, try to catch some barramundi, or go swimming at Lake Moondarra. The place is also great for four-wheel driving, with plenty of rugged terrain to explore just outside of the town.

If you are here in August, don't miss the Isa Rodeo, which is the largest event of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Also, just over 300 kilometres away is the spectacular Lawn Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla National Park and the World-Heritage listed Riversleigh Fossil Fields.
