About Kuranda
Population 1,500
Kuranda is just 25 kilometres northwest of Cairns and is set amongst stunning World Heritage Rainforest. This vibrant small town has a diverse mix of shops, galleries and some great restaurants and cafes.
There is plenty to do while you are here. You could check out one of the wildlife parks, such as the Australian Venom Zoo, BatReach, Bird World, Butterfly Sanctuary, Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve or Koala Gardens.
There are various walking tracks, which take you through magnificent rainforest and along the Barron River. Don't miss the spectacular Barron Falls, particularly in the wet season when they are in flood. You can also discover some of the local Aboriginal Heritage prevalent in the area.
Kuranda is also famous for its markets, which tend to get overrun by tourists on a regular basis. Fortunately there are still some nice stalls that sell local arts and crafts, which are worth battling the crowds
The journey to Kuranda is one of the best experiences in the region. You can arrive here by travelling on the historic Scenic Railway, taking the Skyrail, which is the world's longest rainforest cableway, or self drive, stopping at lookouts along the way for some spectacular views.
