The city of Hervey Bay is the major stepping off point to World Heritage Listed Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. It has developed into quite a tourist town, due to Fraser Island's growing popularity.
It is also famous for whale watching, where up to 3,000 humpback whales enter the bay each year between mid-July to early-November on the return leg of their annual migration. The city puts on the Whale Festival for the first two weeks in August to celebrate this. There are plenty of organised tours available to see these magnificent creatures, or to visit spectacular Fraser Island.
The bay also is great for many water sports including swimming, diving, wind surfing, snorkelling and jet skiing.
The area is also good for fishing with estuary, beach, jetty, reef and game fishing available.
