Cardwell Highlights

  • Good location to find casual work in fruit picking.

  • Main departure point for Hinchinbrook Island and a few other islands in the Great Barrier Reef. Hinchinbrook Island is renowned for its range of habitats and is surrounded by marine park waters where dugong and green turtles frequent.

  • Visit Edmund Kennedy National Park, which is renowned for its natural beauty combined with a diverse range of landscapes. You may even see some of the local estuarine crocodiles.

  • Check out the spectacular Blencoe or Murray Falls.

  • For the adventurous, you could undertake the Wet Tropics Great Walks, a 120km walk where you will see some amazing Northern Queensland scenery.

About Cardwell

Population 1,400

This small town is located in the middle of several large farming communities, which make it an ideal location to find casual work in fruit picking.

Cardwell is located on the coast and is the main departure point for Hinchinbrook Island and a few other islands in the Great Barrier Reef.

Edmund Kennedy National Park is located north of Cardwell and is renowned for its natural beauty combined with a diverse range of landscapes. You may even see some of the local estuarine crocodiles.

You could go and see Blencoe Falls, which plunge 90m to the pool below before cascading a further 230m to the base of the gorge. There is also Murray Falls, which has a stunning 30 metre drop and can be best seen from the falls boardwalk.

For the adventurous you could undertake the Wet Tropics Great Walks, a 120km walk where you will see some amazing Northern Queensland scenery such as spectacular waterfalls and plunging gorges
