About Ayr

Population 8,600

Ayr is located 85 km south of Townsville on the northern side of the mighty Burdekin River and is the main town in the Burdekin Shire.

This region is one of the main areas in Queensland for producing sugar, mangoes, melons and various other fruit and vegetables. Being such a large producer of produce, there is usually good seasonal work available for backpackers on the farms.

The region is also great for fishing with many great spots to cast a line along the Burdekin River and the networks of creeks and estuaries.

Just 17 km's away is Alva Beach, where there are kilometres of unspoilt, white sandy coastline, great for fishing, swimming and windsurfing.

From the small village Alva, you can also access one of the Australia's top wreck dives, the S.S. Yongala with operator Yongala Dive. This famous wreck is located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, just 12 nautical miles from Alva Beach.

The Burdekin's magnificent wetlands also offer excellent birdwatching opportunities with about 280 species being recorded in the area.
