About Atherton

Population 5,900

Atherton is located on the Atherton Tablelands, an area renowned for its tropical rainforest, stunning lakes, waterfalls and fertile farming lands. Being higher up, the climate is a little cooler here than the coast and the lifestyle is much more laid back.

Atherton is a good base to explore some of the surrounding natural attractions such as Lake Tinaroo, Lake Eacham, Lake Barrine and Hasties Swamp National Park, which is renowned for its diverse range of resident and migratory birds.

You can also visit Mount Hypipamee National Park, which is centred around a diatreme, or what is commonly referred to as a volcanic pipe or vent, thought to have been created by a massive gas explosion. You can view it from a platform that provides an uninterrupted view of the remaining 70 metre diameter crater, its sheer granite walls and deep lake.

There are also other attractions worth a visit, such as Crystal Caves and the Hou Wang Temple, or check out some of the quaint small towns nearby.

This area is also good if you are looking to pick up some harvesting and fruit picking work.
