The small town of Airlie Beach is very popular with backpackers, yachties and other holiday-makers. The town is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and plenty of operators provide cruises, charters and bareboat sailing to the islands from here.

It is a cosmopolitan and vibrant town that has some nice palm-fringed beaches, waterfront parks and plenty of great places to eat and get a drink.

If you're hanging around town during the day, the man-made Airlie Beach Lagoon provides safe, clean, year-round swimming and is a great place to chill out and catch a few rays and work on your tan. At night the nightclubs and pubs fill up and the place becomes a party town.

Airlie Beach has a reputation as a place to learn scuba diving and a wide variety of agents operate from here. There is also plenty of diving and snorkelling cruises out to the Great Barrier Reef and around the Whitsunday Islands available.
