Sydney's Northern Beaches

This area extends from Manly in the south to Palm Beach in the north.

Manly Beach

Manly is probably Sydney's other most famous beach. Many backpackers stay in this area, probably because of the fairly relaxed lifestyle it offers.

There is a strong surfing influence here due to the great surfing beaches located here and nearby.

The pedestrian strip which goes from Manly wharf to Manly Beach is called the Corso. Here you can find a variety of shops ranging from tacky to expensive and also a selection of eating areas.

To get to Manly you can catch the Manly ferry. The ferry trip has some of the best views of Sydney Harbour as it crosses the harbour, all at a very reasonable price.

Beaches north of Manly up to Palm Beach

Heading further north, you will find a lot more beaches and many of the best surfing locations in Sydney. There are some beautiful areas around here and the drive up the coastline is a nice thing to do.

You will eventually come to the Pittwater, which is another harbour area, full of remote bushland, stunning scenery and hidden waterways and coves. The Pittwater is excellent for water activities such as canoeing, kayaking, sailing and boating.

Kuringai Chase National Park is located next to the Pittwater. This is one of Australia's most well known National Parks and here you can enjoy activities such as bushwalking, seeing aboriginal art, enjoying spectacular views of the Hawkesbury River, swimming and other water activities.

The most northern beach in this section is Palm Beach. If you watch the Australia television soap - Home and Away, you will recognise this place as 'Summer Bay'. It is a lovely area with some of Sydney's most expensive real estate and it is where many of Sydney's rich retreat to on the weekend.
