Sydney Inner City Suburbs

Includes: Kings Cross, Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay, Woolloomooloo, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Paddington & Woollahra

Kings Cross, Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay, Woolloomooloo

The small area that is considered Kings Cross is regarded to be Sydney's Red Light District, although the area is reasonably tame these days. Kings Cross is a vibrant place; it is an area that has much activity 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It is in close proximity to the city centre of Sydney (approximately 20 minutes walk). Much of Sydney's nightlife is based in this area, with lots of nightclubs and bars to check out.

The suburbs of Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay and Woolloomooloo are located next to Kings Cross. They are a little quieter, but still have much activity. They are pretty areas, with many quaint buildings and houses set along tree-lined streets. These areas also have a great cafe scene and many good restaurants.

You will find quite a lot of backpacker hostels in these areas, as it is such a convenient location to most places.

Darlinghurst & Surry Hills

Located between the City Centre and Kings Cross, these suburbs have a reasonably strong gay influence. Oxford Street separates these two suburbs and along this street you will find many nightclubs, bars and pubs, both straight and gay. There is also a reasonable selection of shops and places to eat along this strip.

Once you get off Oxford Street you will find many beautifully restored terrace houses and converted warehouses, situated along tree-lined streets.

Both these suburbs are known to have many of the best restaurants and cafes in Sydney and recently there has been many hip and cool wine bars opening as well.

Crown Street in Surry Hills has also seen a resurgence in popularity and is now one of the most fashionable destinations to head to on a Friday and Saturday night, with some great pubs, bars and plenty of restaurants located here.

The section of Oxford Street that passes through these two suburbs is renowned as one of the best places to shop for fashion in Sydney, with hundreds of shops and an excellent market on Saturday's available.

You will also find some nice cafes, restaurants and pubs scattered throughout the back streets.
