Newcastle is a modern cosmopolitan city, which offers a more relaxed easygoing lifestyle than nearby Sydney, but still with many of the same attractions.
The city is one of the world's largest exporters of coal, but has a lot more to offer than just industry and commerce. The city has excellent surf beaches on its doorstep, plenty of great places to eat and a happening nightlife. There are also plenty of great places to check out local art and learn about the history of the region.
Newcastle is an excellent base to explore the nearby wine regions of the Hunter Valley where you can find over 100 vineyards. Just north of the city you can witness the natural beauty of the Port Stephens area, or go sandboarding on the huge sand dunes at Stockton Beach. South of the city is Lake Macquarie, which is a great area for many different water sports.
There is plenty to do in this city and is worth spending a couple of days checking it out.
