Cooma is located on the eastern edge of the Snowy Mountains region and was the base and construction centre for the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, the biggest civil engineering project ever undertaken in Australia. The education centre provides a hands-on experience of the scheme, which employed more than 100,000 people from about 30 countries from 1949 until the completion of the project in 1974.
Cooma is only an hour's drive from the New South Wales ski slopes, and because of its close location, becomes a popular and busy destination in the winter months.
Wadbilliga National Park is about 60km away and Kosciuszko National Park is approximately 70km away. At both parks you can explore amazing scenery, or partake in a variety of activities such as bush walking (hiking), snow sports and water sports.
